Risky Business
Risky Business
The first thing I think of when I hear Risky Business is that movie made Tom Cruise. But this isn’t about the movie this is about something completely different.
Risk vs. Reward. Being in the fitness industry I know most of you have heard this. It means picking the right exercise to get the right results for specific clients. For example you are not going to get a 65 year old lady who has trouble with her knees to do box jumps. The risk outweighs the reward.
I watched a documentary the other day with my son about baby penguins after they were born before they were free in the wide open world in this case the ocean, they had to first get across an icy channel. Besides clawing, kicking and scratching every inch of the way, they also had to contend with a pesky leopard seal. Some didn’t make it, but some did and when they finally reached the ocean they were FREE!
The risk here was the icy water- the unknown territory, but the baby penguins knew it was smooth sailing as soon as they passed this rough spot and if they stayed where they were at they were going to die so the reward was greater than the risk.
But this metaphor can be easily spoken about running a business too. I sat back and thought that this was me once upon a time ago. I was the baby penguin clawing, kicking and screaming for the smooth ocean water on the other side. I was struggling to find staff because it was just me working 14 hour days for three years and then I found the ocean, in this case it was two full time trainers to help the load and it felt like I was free again.
What are you struggling with right now when it comes to your life? Half the battle is knowing what you are struggling with. Once you find this – then you can come up with a solution.
Here are some examples of what I mean.
If you are gaining weight, you need to exercise. If you know you need to exercise but you don’t have the motivation you need to hire a fitness professional to help you.
If you are trying to quit smoking instead of quitting cold turkey, write down every time you have a smoke throughout the week and the next week try to have less than that and the week after and so forth. Make it a game.
If you know you are eating junk food a lot don’t buy junk food. Or each time you have a craving of junk food replace it with a healthier habit of eating a serving of fruits or veggies.
Before I leave you, here is a great quote from success coach, John Addison
“ Lucky breaks come by chance. Success comes by choice.”
Everyone has their icy water moments where you can either sink or swim but everyone has the same tools to be successful.
