Essential Supplements (Part 3 of 3)
Greens
If you know you are not getting enough nutrients from food then I highly suggest looking into supplements. Supplements are not supposed to replace your food intake- they are supposed to enhance it and Greens is no different.
Did you know less than 1% of men and 4% of women ages 18 to 24, less than 6% of men and 9% of women ages 25 to 34, less than 14% of men and 16% of women ages 35 to 49 and less than 24% of men and 22% of women ages 50 to 64 are not consuming 5 or more servings of fruits/vegetables per day?
Fruits and veggies are good for us. The missing links from my clients getting phenomenal results usually stem from two things- not enough protein and/or not enough fruits and veggies – which is why I came out with three of these articles. Consuming fruits and veggies appears to reduce cardiovascular disease, various cancers (colon, prostate, breast, cervical, endometrial, gastric, lung, lymphoma, ovarian, pancreatic and thyroid) high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, obesity, stroke, eye disease, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and osteoporosis.
People tend to consume more protein than fruits and veggies. This can create an acid load in the body. Introducing more vegetables and fruits (including a greens supplement) can help counteract this acid load and preserve bone and muscle.
For these reasons alone show you why you need to eat enough fruits and veggies, especially if you have performance and health goals in mind. If you know you are not getting enough fruits and veggies in then that’s where a greens supplement comes into play.
To get more bang for your buck you can add your greens supplement into your whey protein shake. This is called a “Super Shake” termed by Precision Nutrition. Supplementation with greens supplements can benefit energy, recovery and antioxidant status and bone health.
Greens are very alkaline and can help balance dietary acids. You can have an acidic diet if you eat a lot of protein and exercise a lot. You can enhance your recovery with alkalizing foods, along with protein. However if you consume a lot of protein without fruits and veggies it can compound acid production. Which is why a greens supplement are essential if your fruit and veggie intake comes up short. If you consume 10 servings of fruits and veggies per day than supplementing with a greens product wont be necessary.
There you have it, these last three articles I discussed why fish oil, whey protein and greens supplements are good for you. Again, I can’t stress this enough though supplements are not supposed to replace whole food! They are supposed to supplement it!
The top greens supplement I would recommend is Greens Plus by Genuine Health. You can get it any any drug store or online. It looks like this. If you don’t like the taste of liquid compost though I would go for the berry flavour..;)
