Why Calorie Counting Doesn’t Help
The old way to lose weight would be to count your calories and make sure you are burning more calories then what you are taking in. But it’s not so simple; a calorie isn’t a calorie. What you see on the package doesn’t necessarily mean it has that exact number of calories. Everybody is different, and we all digest food differently, and another thing that you have to take into consideration is the people who find out how much calories are in a particular food, to do that they balm the food in the lab where everything is controlled. There is a 25% error rate on the calorie content on food packages. That’s a pretty significant error rate especially when it comes to your fitness goals, but it’s not surprising considering the food companies may use any of five different methods to count calories. Balming is one of them.
Another reason why calorie counting doesn’t work is probably the most important. It’s not practical. For the average person who doesn’t live in the gym because they have kids, a job, chores to do around the house they don’t have time to sit there and count calories. Sure they will probably do it for a week or a month top, but they will fall off the bandwagon. As fitness professionals, it’s our job to keep them on the bandwagon. We don’t need anything more that will cause our client’s stress levels to rise because let’s face it, the average person’s stress level is high enough as it is and once they get to the gym to train, it’s their time to decompress especially if they live busy lives. It could be the only hour of their day where they are alone.
Calorie Counting doesn’t work for 95% of the population. The rest of the population, they are the elite so UFC fighters, Olympic athletes where every calorie counts. I am a Precision Nutrition Level One coach and what I like about the program is everybody starts off pretty basic because they have found after coaching 100,000 people that people that know how to eat well, usually don’t and the people that don’t know how to eat well just don’t either. Once you start complying with the bi-weekly nutrition habits and your goals start to change then we can look at calorie counting. But at this point, 95% of you would already have reached your goals.
