When Survival Is Your Only Option
Yesterday I was discussing how a lack of sleep can play a huge role in your performance. Today I’m going to talk about the cause of some of the lack of sleep out there, especially for young parents. Kids. You see right now my youngest who is five months old is teething and he is up 4 to 5 times per night. Three if you are lucky. I have to hand it to my wife though because she deals with the youngest 99% of the time during the night. I just can’t get up; she had him one night screaming his head off, and she put him right beside me as I was sleeping for an experiment and I didn’t even wake up. I’m a really heavy sleeper now considering during my volunteer/full-time firefighter days. Back then I was a light sleeper.
But what do you do when you are trying to start a good habit like exercise or eating right when something like this happens? Seriously I don’t have the answer. Just weather the storm, but that doesn’t mean you should give up altogether on your way to becoming healthier. As someone who does this for a living, it breaks my heart to see people try to accomplish their goals and something happens in their life and they give up completely.
If the day is going not going off well, treat tomorrow as a brand new day. Wipe the slate clean. Also if you have five minutes to yourself just breathe! Do some light exercise, anything to get the blood flowing. This is just a phase, and you will come out strong. Just don’t give up on yourself!
